Better Reading for School Success

 Afterschool Program and Study

Children in grades 3 to 6 are invited to attend a FREE

                                         afterschool program!

Deadline for registration: Tuesday October 1st, 2013

Children in grades 3 to 6 are invited to attend our Better Reading for School Success afterschool program from 3:20 p.m. to 4:35 p.m. each Tuesday starting October 8th, 2013 and ending December 10th, 2013!  This program will be run at King Edward Public School and will include fun activities related to helping children in grades 3 to 6 to improve their literacy skills. Snacks are provided!  If you would like your child to participate, please contact Melissa at dolx3180@mylaurier.ca to request a registration package. Registration packages must be returned to the school by October 1st, 2013.

To help us evaluate the effectiveness of the program, with your permission, children will also be asked to participate in activities at their school during school hours in September or October (which will take about 2 hours) and again in December (which will take about an hour and 30 minutes). Examples of these activities include reading short stories and paragraphs, saying words that fall into different categories, answering multiple choice questions, and completing a questionnaire about how confident you are with reading and writing.  You (the child’s parent/guardian) will also be asked to complete questionnaires at the same times.   Your child will also be asked at each program approximately how much time they spent on homework and reading that week.
For participating, your child will be given a $15.00 Chapters gift card at the end of the study! You (the child’s parent/ guardian) will also be offered a workshop in October, hosted by members of our research team, about fun ways that you can promote literacy at home.

If you have any questions, please contact Melissa Dol at dolx3180@mylaurier.ca.

This study has been approved by Wilfrid Laurier University’s Research Ethics Board (REB #3309) and by the Waterloo Region District School Board.  If you choose to participate, we will phone you after the registration deadline to let you know the date of the parent/guardian workshop and to provide reminders about the program.  Please keep one copy of this cover letter and one copy of the consent form.
