Over a year ago, the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Connecticut led to the Ontario government creating newlegislation to require schools to maintain security by keeping all doors locked at all times. In a busy district of downtown Kitchener, a locked door policy is in the best interests of the safety of our students and staff.

New equipment is being installed at King Edward P.S. that will require all parents and visitors to hit a buzzer to signal that you have arrived at the school. A monitor in the office will be installed to allow office staff to identify who you are and release the lock of the door. Our estimated start date will be on Monday, March 24 when the locked door policy will begin.

Morning Entry: Students who are coming to Breakfast club may come in through the front door starting at 8:40 am. They will need to buzz in and the door will be opened. Students  coming to school to start their day will be greeted by staff and they will open the doors at the 9:10 entry bell.

If students are late: they will need to buzz in at the front doors in order enter the school and then sign in.

Dismissal: At the end of the day, we are asking parents to establish a meeting spot outside of the school in our upper playground. When children are dismissed, they will come out to the meeting spot and greet you there. Parents are asked not to come in and wait in the school because it will be necessary to buzz you in the building which will be difficult.

Mid Day Pickups: If you need to come to the school in the middle of the day to pick up a child, you may need to set aside some extra time. At times, our office is not always staffed, and you may need to wait to come into the building until staff return to the office to open the door for you.

Be On Time: All parents are encouraged to support their children to coming to school on time in order to avoid needing to buzz in to the school at the front door. All students should be arriving to school by 9:00 am in order to join their class and be ready to enter our building with their class at 9:10 am.
