We have just received notice that utility relocations will be occuring in preparation for the Region of Waterloo’s Rapid Transit Project.

Background

In June 2011, Regional council approved Light Rail Transit as the preferred Rapid Transit technology from Conestoga Mall to Fairview Park Mall.  Construction of the project is slated to commence in 2014 with completion in 2017.  In advance of this construction, there is a considerable amount of utility relocation work involving telecommunication, gas, and hydro infrastructure which must take place.  More information about the Rapid Transit Project may be found at www.regionofwaterloo.ca/rapidtransit.

Scope of Work/Disruption

Beginning in April and in the coming months, Bell Canada, Kitchener Utilities (gas), Union Gas, Rogers communications and Telus will be relocating their existing infrastructure in the locations which are identified in a sketch that you will find on the region website.  For this work to proceed there will be temporary closures of the adjacent curb lasnes in the vicinity of the active construction.  In order that disruption to the boulevards is kept to a minimum, the work is proposed to take place using ‘trenchless methods” wherever possible.

Working hours are permitted from 7 am  to 7 pm, Monday to Saturday.

How will it affect King Edward?

At this point we are looking at minimal disruptions.  Pedestrian Access will be maintained for the duration of the contract.  Where the sidewalk is close to deep excavations or equipment, the sidewalk will be separated from the work area by temporary fencing.
